The organizers of Holstein Heaven P.E.I. '07 expected maybe 400 attendees, but the numbers have zoomed to almost 800 breeders and guests participating in everything from workshops, shows, sales, farm tours and an awards banquet Friday night at the Delta Prince Edward.
But the excitement of the April 12-13 events may have something to do with the history being made this week.
Not only will three Island dairy farms earn a national Master Breeder's shield, but this is the first time in 123 years the Holstein convention has ever been held on the Island.
In addition, the very first Master Breeder award ever presented in Canada to J. Walter Jones of P.E.I. in 1930 will be donated back to the Holstein Canada museum by his granddaughter Dale Dewar. Jones later became premier and his cow, Abegweit Milady, was the world champion for milk production.
